Time Month - Mini Review: Time Runners

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s my ‘Pleasure?’ to welcome you to Time Month

Time travel is something used in books, TV shows and movies, both high and low budget ones. During the month of March, we’ll look at such movies and their varying qualities, plus a special episode of Doctor Who that needs covering. But before we get to that, let’s take a look at Time Runners.

Also known as 95ers: Echoes this movie was, by the looks of things, a passion project for Thomas Gomez Durham, who is credited for several things in the movie. It was funded, at least in part, by Kickstarter, giving him $17020, minus the cut taken by Kickstarter. Apparently, they’d already raised $150k, so… How does it hold up? Well let’s take a look.

The story focuses on a woman named Sally Biggs, who, for extremely poorly explained and highly contrived reasons (even for a movie in this genre), has the power to rewind time. She makes one step she cannot change and falls in love with a scientist named Horatio. Unfortunately, he’s involved in a work-related accident and dies, leaving her to take care of her unborn child with only the help of a high paying job, her husband’s sister and friends.

But her attempts to investigate end up attracting attention of sinister forces of a very confusing future brought to life by presumably a substantial portion of the budget and their one good actor. They’re in a race to get very confusing variables right so they can stop this force in their tracks.

OK, let’s get to the positives, it was watchable, which is more than I can say for a couple of movies in this list. Also, the story had some nice ideas to it and erm… yeah that’s about it. They do themselves a favour by not incorporating lots of special effects.

The acting, whilst not the worst I’ve seen, I’ll be getting to that, is pretty poor.

But let’s get to the bigger problems with this movie. It doesn’t really use its creative premise to its potential. There is one action scene where Sally’s ability to control time is used in an action scene and it’s done pretty nicely. I wish there was done like that, it can’t even imagine it being that difficult to edit. Because the story itself is actually pretty boring.

And with regards to Sally, they give her hallucinations that are supposedly an alternate timeline which again I think should’ve been explored more. Oh, and the cystic fibrosis bit should’ve been cut from the movie. Not only does it pile more unnecessary cr*p onto Sally but it also really doesn’t fit seeing as we see him as an adult in the f*cking movie and there’s no evidence of him having it, nor is there for Sally for that matter.

Also, no I don’t buy the explanation for her powers either. There’s contrivance and then there’s no f*cking way that would happen. I’m not going to say what it is here, just know that it’s bullsh*t.

One down folks, and there are at least 2 on the list that are worse than this.
