#56 Marvel's Spider-man season 1

This might be a review that takes a while it because of scheduling, but this made me stop in my tracks! I’ve put a review on an early list before, but never have I started writing it before its time was coming, that stopped with this. Yup, we’re talking about Spider-man again.

Ultimate Spider-man was not a series I enjoyed, it had a number of issues, particularly regarding their over-use of 4th wall and anime-style jokes, some of the sitcom plots and the fact that Peter Parker as an entity is ignored for large chunks of the series, also the series tried to expand its universe at the expense of having its own identity. But the series did have some decent animation, occasionally a joke would land and there’s no doubt a guest appearance would bring a smile to kids’ faces.

So… WHAT THE F*CK IS THIS SH*T?

I’ll admit, when I heard about the reboot, I was excited. Hearing it would go back to Peter Parker’s roots, and the design aesthetic kinda reminding me of Spectacular Spider-man, which is a favourite series of mine, all good signs. But… from seeing the first few episodes my first thoughts were… my god is it awful. I mean it, this is the worst Spider-man cartoon I’ve seen, and it’s by a considerable margin. But I’ll stop beating about the bush and try and explain why.

Mini Review - Spy

I love me a spy comedy. Kingsman: The Secret Service might be one of my favourite movies that I reviewed last year. But there was one movie I said topped it and that was Spy

Released in 2015, the trailers for this movie did not fill me with hope, so I didn’t catch it at the cinema but I did eventually catch it on DVD, the movie was a decent success earning $235m on a $65m budget and has an 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But it’s been a while since the first time, does it still hold up? Here are my updated thoughts

Mini Review - Logan

Wolverine has been regarded as one of the most popular X-men, he’s shown up in almost every X-men movie in one way or another, and has been the main character in the vast majority of them. That’s a testament to Hugh Jackman who elevated this character beyond his comic book popularity, to the fact that whilst Fantastic 4’s future in comics went into doubt after Secret Wars, the X-men survived and recently Wolverine was brought back into the fray in the Marvel Legacy title.

Logan, Jackman’s final performance as Wolverine is based on a comic book Old Man Logan, I have not read the comic book but I know it has a following, with him replacing Wolverine in certain X-men titles and having a steady performing solo book.

With the success of Deadpool, Fox knew that an R-rated comic book movie could be successful and given Wolverine’s powers and history, an R-rated movie was ripe for him. Of course, they want to mitigate the risk, the budget for this movie was $96m, about half what the budget of your average superhero blockbuster. It was very successful, earning $616.8m at the box office and having a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

4 issue test #43 - Runaways

We’re going for something a little different this time, Runaways was not a traditional superhero story, it was the tale of a bunch of young children, banding together to keep themselves from becoming like their supervillain parents. Some had powers, some didn’t but over time they became more than friends.

I’m paraphrasing a little, I never read the original Runaways but I was intrigued enough to pick it up when it started coming out. On writing duties for the relaunched title we have Rainbow Rowell, a well acclaimed author of young adult fiction… that I’ve never read. What I do know is this is her first time writing a comic. Kris Anka is on art duties, and he has somewhat more experience in Marvel, starting with X-men and even recently doing art for Captain Marvel. Matthew Wilson is handling colouring and he’s got some serious credit in the industry, with Star Wars, The Mighty Thor and Captain America in his crosshairs at Marvel currently.

I don’t know anything about the characters or their history, and I’ve yet to see the show on Fox so let’s see what kind of first impression this comic leaves.
