Netflix Retrospective - Iron Fist Season 2 Episodes 1-2 - The Fury of the Iron Fist/This City's Not for Burning
A lot of
changes happened behind the scenes with Iron Fist after the poor reception of
series 1. Scott Buck was replaced as showrunner by M Raven Metzer, who’s
filmography includes Heroes: Reborn and Elektra… see we’re off to a great
start. The episode number was cut from 13 to 10 which if you’ve read any of my
reviews of Netflix Marvel shows you’d know I think is a great move considering
the pacing has always been a weaker element of these shows. Clayton Barber is
the new fight co-ordinator, and with Black Panther a recent addition to his
arsenal it’s a good choice, especially since the fights in the first season
were rather weak.
Unfortunately,
it wasn’t enough to save the show as it had a low critical rating and it was
among the first of the Netflix Marvel shows to face cancellation.
Unlike the
first season, episodes are named after stories from the comics rather than
martial arts moves. The names will hence will feel a little more relevant to
what’s going on.

Netflix Month: The Defenders - The H Word/Mean Right Hook
Phew, it’s a
been big year for Marvel’s Netflix series. In 2018 they’ve brought all their
individual shows up to s2 with new series of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and a
shorter season of Iron Fist. And they’re yet to slow down with third series of Daredevil
and Jessica Jones and another Punisher series (I’m not interested enough in the
Punisher to review him, not the fault of the actor, but just the character
himself)
We’ll look
at Jessica Jones and Luke Cage’s second seasons next year and Iron Fist in
early 2020, assuming I’m not burnt out. But before we get to that, here’s the
moment this was all building to: The Defenders
After the
initially positive but later mixed reception of Luke Cage and the initially
negative and later mixed reception of Iron Fist, this series received mixed
reception. Has Netflix lost its spark? Let’s find out as we begin Netflix Month
With the
first 2 episodes of the Defenders.

Netflix Retrospective: Iron Fist season 1 episodes 1-2 - Snow Gives Way/Shadow Hawk Takes Flight
Iron Fist is
the last of the Marvel retrospectives I’ll be doing for the time being. I’ll be
doing Voltron: Legendary Defender next but before we can get a half-decent
show, this… Iron Fist is widely considered the worst of the Marvel Netflix
shows and believe me, there’s good reasons for that. I’ve had only a little
experience with Iron Fist in the comics.
He’s the guy
who said “I fart mystic powers” unfortunately the jovial nature of the
character is not captured here. Let’s talk about casting, some are upset that
an Asian actor wasn’t cast, I get the hatred of white saviour narratives but it
doesn’t bother me as much as the fact they cast an actor with minimal
experience in martial arts as one of the most martial-arts based superheroes
there is. But let’s not beat about the bush and dig into the first 2 episodes
of Iron Fists. Because 2 episodes is all I can take.
