Neeson Month - MIni Review: Batman Begins

It’s Neeson Month

So, let’s talk about Batman. Batman is my favourite DC character, in case the fact that reviewed stuff with him in it more often than more-or-less anything isn’t a clear indication. And I think the Dark Knight is the best live action Batman movie. Combining all the elements I love about the character, reasonably grounded with emotional gut-punches to boot. The Dark Knight Rises that came after I also enjoy, in spite of its many flaws (plug) but today we’re going to be talking about Batman Begins, the one I like the least of the 3.

Released in 2005, this movie was a critical success with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though its profit was modest, I suspect possibly by fans reluctant to watch a reboot after the disaster that was Batman and Robin, the movie did make a modest profit and paved the way for a series that grossed over $2bn overall

4 issue test #39 - Teen Titans (DC Rebirth)

Yes, I know it's another cheat but they use the same logo and this review's late already

It’s DC Rebirth Time again!

I’d previously reviewed a Teen Titans book, it was one of my earliest reviews of this format. It… wasn’t great really, I did drop the book after the 4th issue and even though a couple of ideas tossed did gain my attention, it was never really enough to bring me back in.

But DC Rebirth has shone a new light on the Titans with a new creative team and a new roster. In the writer’s chair is Ben Percy, who is also tackling the Green Arrow books and with artists… well, there are quite a few of them. The roster, I’ll cover in the description since the first issue is primarily about getting everyone together. Speaking of which, let’s get to it.

#4 Son of Batman

DC’s line of animated movies have been a joy over the last few years, but have varied in quality. Superman unbound is probably the least favourite of the ones I’ve watched, Batman: Under the Red Hood being one of the best. But after a few years of making mostly decent adaptations, they started bringing a new 52 vibe to their adaptations. Justice League: War, and adaptation of the opening arc of Geoff John’s Justice League series is somewhat a guilty pleasure of mine, it’s far from seamless, it makes a mockery of Wonder Woman, ignores Aquaman in favour of Shazam (or Captain Marvel), and is all action with very little actual story...

Batman is a seller for DC, no question about this. It's the main reason he’s in the sequel to Man of Steel, and it's the reason the majority of DC adaptations feature Batman in some way. In 2014 (perhaps down to it being the Dark Knight’s 75th Anniversary) all 3 of their adaptations feature Batman, with Batman being the star of 2 of them. Whilst the third film, set to bridge a gap between Batman: Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum isn’t due for release yet, the latest DC animated Batman adaptation is Son of Batman.
