Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Episode 4 review - Brothers of the Broken Horn

Well, the last episode showed promise, let's take a look at the next one and see how they follow that up

Brothers of the Broken Horn

Well, Hondo is back, and he’s just as fun to watch as ever

In fact, that’s really how I’d describe this whole episode, fun to watch, the problem is there isn’t a lot beneath the superficial here.

Torn between training, more training and just life, Ezra feels in need of an escape (which he just got in the last episode but let’s ignore that) so when the crew are out looking for fuel cells to save a race from freezing, Ezra happily responds a distress call from the Broken Horn, a ship that once belonged to Vizago, a character who we last saw in Rebel Resolve and said then I didn’t find anything about him of note.

But instead he finds Hondo who ‘won’ the ship and is busy on some pressing pirate business getting harder with the empire. But Ezra finds that he has the fuel cells and, assuming for some reason that his colleagues will fail, offers to help Hondo in exchange for the fuel cells.

OK, there are some awesome moments. Hondo is a blast to listen to, he’s hilarious, his dialogue is brilliantly written and let’s be honest. Chopper wheeling on his middle leg firing two blasters is absolutely hilarious. Also Ezra being even slightly smart and hiding his identity from Hondo to start with was good.

OK, now for my issues with the episode. Let’s start with the start. Ezra’s doing blaster training with Rex (who it appears is now an official member of team Ghost, which is good, that’s 1/5 of my list) and is called upon to do Jedi training by Kanan. Then he’s called to do cleaning which he hadn’t done earlier because of his other training whilst the others are on a mission. Everyone’s being a dick to him and I can totally sympathise.

It’s also a fairly shallow episode. There’s a not a lot of plot advancement and very little character development in this one. It relies on Hondo carrying the episode through and he does, but only barely.

I’ve not been impressed with season 2 thus far, it’s not been terrible but it’s off the back off of something so good (the Seige of Lothal) that this step down in quality just isn’t acceptable.

Rating 6.5/10
