Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Finale review - Twilight of the Apprentice

No folks, I really don't have an April fools joke for this year. I could tell you those hiatuses are cancelled or I'll be reviewing Batman Begins in the near future or the Last Airbender is not the worst thing I've ever seen but what's the point... So here's a review of a cr*ppy television show it's the worst thing ever, seriously. HA APRIL FOOL!

We've come to the end, dear viewers, let's take a look at the series finale of Star Wars Rebels.

Twilight of the Apprentice

I have no jokes to start this review, so here's a fluffy kitten

This episode was crammed with inquisitors, Darth Maul and a showdown with Darth Vader himself, and leaving people in positions where no-one will ever be the same, in other words the show has consequences!

So, Kanan, Ahsoka and Ezra head to Malachor, and find an ancient Sith Temple where thousands of Jedi used those cross-guard lightsabres (yay reference?) fought against the Sith presumably before the rule of 2 presumably with the intent of stopping their massive temple/battlestation wiping out everything.

There is an Inquisitor, known as the 8th brother (apparently), who has missiles which he uses once but never again and manages to separate the trio. Ezra comes across a man wearing a cloak who calls himself ‘old master’ yeah, it’s Darth Maul. He helps Ezra but is secretly trying to make him his apprentice.

As the Temple begins to activate, the other two inquisitors and soon Vader himself arrive and well, this battle is not going to be forgotten very soon, let me tell you.

So, I suppose it’s first to mention Darth Maul. Robbed of his army, he is an enemy of the Empire as much as the rebels and does want to fight. But… his obsession with Legacy and the obvious mistrust of him being who he is keeps him away from the actual rebellion. His plan is interesting, the temple requires a master and an apprentice to open it, and he does kinda succeed in opening up Ezra to the Dark Side. The ending left that point particularly ominous.

One thing to say, the Inquisitors using their auto-spin blades as helicopter is equal parts awesome and ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome you might say. That’s one thing no regular spinning blade could do.

And so we come down to the action and fight fight fight. Maul dispatched the Inquistors very easily, perhaps a little too easily but the action was pretty damn intense. Especially when Maul (and spoilers) betrays everyone and blinds Kanan. That’s not something they’re walking away from, he’s blind for the remainder of the episode and they hint that it might become a permanent change.

And of course, there’s the battle you’ve been waiting for, Ahsoka vs Darth Vader. You hear Ahsoka call him by Anakin a couple of times in the episode, I’m not sure whether Ezra heard it but it could be something interesting going forward. Either way, you can see that Ahsoka is giving her all in this fight and Vader is giving more effort than he did against Kanan and Ezra but this fight doesn’t end well as the temple collapses with Ahsoka and Vader inside. It’s shown afterwards that Vader survived but Ahsoka’s fate it yet to be determined.

The rebels have it hard, robbed of their most powerful ally, one member kinda crippled, one potentially falling to the Dark Side and whilst they’re down 3 inquisitors, there are likely more to come. Season 3 is assured and we’ll find out whether they’ll be a special soon enough. But this show is still on my watch list for next year so I’ll see you then.

Rating 9/10
