Star Wars Rebels episodes 13-14 review - Call to Action/Rebel Resolve

It's time for the Star Wars Rebels Finale, and it's airing over 5 weeks. F*ck you Disney XD

In all seriousness, let's take a look at 2 of them, and see how it looks

Call to Action

One thing about this show is that time and again, the empire is humiliated as the rebels continue to sabotage their efforts. And now the empire has had enough, and they’ve sent in the reinforcements of Grand Moff Tarkin. (And let’s not forget the Darth Vader theme) for some reason he’s determined to believe all the Jedi are dead (we already know that Obi Wan Kenobe is not dead, so… as an audience, we know he’s wrong, but that’s by-the-by)

So, Kanan has a plan to even the score after Trayvis turned out to be a trap (you know... I still think that was obvious after the FIRST TIME YOU WERE SET UP) anyway his plan is to capture an imperial communications tower and send out a message of hope and freedom. Something Ezra’s parents were known to do, and horrible things happened to them.

Tarkin certainly makes an impression, he has 2 imperial captains killed (and people complained this show wouldn’t be dark enough, seriously, it is)

But the empire is ready to strike back (get it?) they know the rebels are coming and have set a trap, and by god, the action is brilliant. The rebels gain access to the tower, but Kanan is captured by the inquisitor

The empire shows its brutality as it cuts off the communication from the rebels by blowing up its own communications tower.

This episode is the first part of a 3-part finale, and if the first part is anything to go by, this should be a good one.

Rebel Resolve

It’s an interesting time, and it’s an interesting avenue to explore that perhaps, in the immediate short term at least. That transmission they were able to beam out, has made things worse. The empire is more determined than ever to shut them down, and now that they’re public, they’re jeopardising their mission.

So Fulcrum is ordering them to stand down. Hera is the only one willing to, sort of… So it’s up to everyone else to find a way, which starts with Vizago, the guy that was in the first couple of episodes as a sort of helpful hint guy and I have failed to mention him at any point.

He’s reluctant to help, because the transmission has made things harder for him, but Ezra takes the only risk he can, he reveals that he and Kanan are jedi. Vizago agrees to give them some help in exchange for a favour at the time of his choosing, oh these rarely end well.

But the plan is solid. With the tower destroyed, the empire are using droids to carry transmissions, so they have Chopper replace one of them and board a coms ship, where he downloads imperial data, and a short space-fight later (how does the phantom survive that many hits) they have an idea where Kanan is, the mustefar system

The one thing that’s killing it at the moment is the pacing. Multiple part episodes should not have 2-week breaks between them. If you count the early online-releases, that means all 3 parts of this 3-part episode have had 2-week breaks. This kills the pacing, especially since the episodes end on a moment of hope, rather than a cliff-hanger.

But that’s the fault of the network, not the producers of the show. Another episode that is defining a very high standard, and sets the stage for a finale battle that’s not to be missed.
