The Flash Season 2 Episode 1 review - The Man Who Saved Central City

So, The Flash is back for its second season. And it's first season was really good, so we should hopefully expect the same from the second

Apologies to my readers this is going to be less of a review and more me ranting about a plot point.

The Man Who Saved Central City

So, last season they decided to kill of Eobard Thawne by having Eddie shoot himself, so that Eobard was never born. In this episode we see that nothing has in fact changed because of this, AND THAT IS GODDAMN LAZY!!!

IF EOBARD WASN’T BORN, HE NEVER WENT BACK IN TIME AND KILLED BARRY’S MOTHER, HE NEVER TOOK THE BODY OF HARRISON WELLS SO THE PARTICLE ACCELERATOR DIDN’T GET COMPLETED THAT QUICKLY, MEANING BARRY ALLEN SHOULDN’T BE THE FLASH!!!

BUT NO, THEY’RE PLAYING IT COMPLETELY STRAIGHT. HOW CAN MAN WHO DOESN’T EXIST HAVE CREATED A WILL?!!! God, this is the grand canyon of plot holes and killed any good thing that came out of this episode (and there were good things)

OK, say they didn’t want to affect Arrow’s continuity by effectively altering the time line. THEN DON’T HAVE CHARACTERS COMMIT ACTIONS TO DELIBERATELY CHANGE THE TIMESTREAM! Have Eddie not a direct ancestor of Eobard, have him sacrifice himself to stop Eobard. Bam, Eddie’s dead, Eobard’s dead but all their actions can remain intact. Barry is still the Flash, Star Labs is still operational, Eobard could’ve left a will and instructed it to be given to Barry, Barry’s mother is still dead, his father is in prison (until the end of the episode) and we can figure out a different excuse for the black hole ending

I’m sorry, but this has got to be one of the worst paradoxes I’ve ever seen in TV or movies. And I watched Doctor Who, Wolverine and the X-men, Young Justice, Justice League Unlimited, Static Shock and am in the process of watching the Back to the Future movies (and these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head)

OK, I’m calm, I’m calm, I’M STILL CALM, STILL CALM ARGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

OK, let’s look at the episode itself. After Ronnie became the Flash equivalent of Rory Williams by dying again (yeah, I’m sure it’ll last just as long as the last one) to stop that black hole. The Flash decided to play it solo to prevent his friends and loved ones getting hurt (this plot beat seems irritatingly familiar) but when new villain the Atom Smasher who shares the face of someone who was recently killed, his friends must convince Barry that they need him and get the team back together to combat this threat

So, the character work was good, the dialogue was usual Flash standard; the tone was about right, the acting varied between good and ok, the effects for the Atom Smasher was sub par (but I'll give it a pass) the teasers about Zoom and Jay Garrick were nice.

But I’m sorry, great as all that was; this plot-canyon killed any enjoyment I get out of this episode.

Rating 4.5/10
