Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Episodes 2-3 review - Relics of the Old Republic/Always Two There Are

Relics of the Old Republic

Well, I said that part 2 would better and I was right, sort of…

With the empire coming the rebels and clones prepare for battle, but with the forces against them outnumbering them they’ll have to fight smart to survive

We finally got the action that was missing in the last one (that creature they caught was dropped, so that whole sub-plot could’ve easily been cut out) but it’s a very slow action scene as the half the episode is battle strategies and the numbers are fairly limited given the location.

After some TIE-fighters are destroyed, Kallus orders the deployment of walkers, the commentary on them standing is amusing, since I’d seen walkers with 2 legs in the Clone Wars, but… Anyway, the only way to beat them is to get in the sandstorm and use the force, Kanan and Ezra do fine here.

Here lies the biggest problem. The development is all too easy. There’s still no real fallout to Wolfe’s betrayal. Kanan’s trust of the clones seems arbitrary rather than a conscious choice and we don’t see Ahsoka’s mission, if it’s even over. Sabine, Zeb and particularly Hera are background characters with very little to do. I know some development is coming for Sabine and thank heavens, but please make sure you develop all your characters, you’re not a big crew, it shouldn’t be that difficult.

So, less sluggish two parters and more character development, that’s what is needed for Rebels now

And of course, Kallus is abandoned as his ship is called to meet with Vader, and we get an introduction to the new Inquisitor, well, one of them, and if the internet is right, he’s also known as the 5th son, let’s see how this comes into play.

Always Two There Are

OK, this episode was thankfully a standalone introducing to us our inquisitors.

So the rebels investigate an abandoned medical facility in the hopes of finding some medical supplies but the seventh sister lies in wait for them, and the fifth son is not far behind

It’s interesting that neither of the inquisitors seem all that interested in working with the empire. The seventh sister seems to be a solo act not even introducing herself to Kallus whilst the first son considers himself better than them and ditches them at the first opportunity he has.

Coming together, whilst there is momentary bickering, they seem to work quite well together, the seventh sister even gifts the fifth son her tactical droids to hunt them down, well, allows him to borrow them anyway.

Once again, we only see some of the crew on this mission. Ezra, Sabine, Zeb and Chopper. Hera had better be at the forefront of the next mission! Anyway, we see Sabine do nothing that surprises anyone, Ezra gets an uncomfortable (for him anyway) encounter with the seventh sister and Zeb comes up with the most ludicrous plan I’ve seen conceived for a rescue mission, and it f*cking works.

This episode starts off kinda lighter and gets progressively darker as the episode moves on. Leading to quite a downer ending where Kanan realises that they have no idea what they’re up against (although hinting that he might know more than he’s letting on)

The atmosphere in the base, whilst they get in a few jokes, is very horror-movie like, it’s all quite impressive visually, props to the musicians and the animators for making it work so well.

This was the best episode of the season thus far; it’s not got the scope that Fire Across the Galaxy or the Siege of Lothal had but it’s early days yet.

Rating 8/10
