Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Episode 3 review - The Holocrons of Fate

Thanks to the delay of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Wars Rebels has returned a week early. Here are my thoughts on the latest episode, the Holocrons of Fate

The Holocrons of Fate

Well, I expected the Bendu to return but wow, that was quick

So, Maul is back, and for some reason people are saying he should die soon. I’m not one of those people. I honestly think there’s a purpose for Maul in the larger game here, providing a wild card for Grand Admiral Thrawn. Also, since the Inquisitors are pretty much out of the picture, Maul is the only catalyst for lightsaber combat. Also, he now knows Kanan's real name of Caleb Dume, that can't be unimportant for later on

Meme clip time!

Anyway, this time Maul seeks to combine a jedi and sith holocron to gain answers to questions through the force, he kidnaps the ghost crew and forces Kanan and Ezra to recover the sith holocron from the Bendu.

The Bendu is my new favourite characters in Rebels. Sorry, but he what few lines he had in this episode he was hilarious. He’s Yoda with more of a sense of humour and less intolerance for the use of the Dark Side.

Ezra’s relationship with Kanan is once again at the forefront here. Having Maul back on their radar means we can bring up the uncomfortable points of Malachor and what happened there. Ezra’s still under the belief that to protect people he needs to go alone, that is drawn from guilt and we saw it with Aang in the first episode after his defeat at Ba Sing Se (see my Avatar: The Last Airbender retrospectives) but Kanan convinces him to forgive himself, and restores some trust between. Ezra even backs away from using the sith holocron. Also, is Ezra like the Bendu now, able to open both Jedi and Sith Holocrons?

Anyway the visions, and the great animation style they used for that bit, the bright light with everything glowing, it looked pretty nice. Anyway, both Maul and Ezra saw things through the Holocrons. Maul found out that ‘he lives’ probably meaning Obi-Wan Kenobe. Showdown on Tatooine, possible Luke appearance, I’ll take it.

As for Ezra, he saw twin suns, or is it twin sons? Who knows, probably the former given that Tatooine has twin suns but it’s open to theories. But it is time for them to look back to the Empire and build up the threat of Grand Admiral Thrawn before returning to this plotline.

Rating 8.5/10
