Doctor Who series 8 episode 5 -Time Heist Review

Time for another Doctor Who review in it's newly scheduled time, Friday

Time Heist

This is my definition of a fun episode

Not so dumb it makes me want to bang my head against a brick wall, not with characters that are irritating beyond compare, and filled with plot-holes you could drive a truck through (Robots of Sherwood)

It’s not overly serious; it’s a coherent story, with likeable characters, and villains that are both terrifying and sympathetic.

So, let’s take a look at the story. The Doctor, Clara, +2 others, Saibra, a shape-shifter who turns into anything she touches and Psi, a cyborg hacker who deleted memories of his family to avoid mentioning them under questioning, are tasked with robbing a bank and with no idea what they’re doing and what they’re looking for as clues are revealed slowly. Guarding the bank is a creature called the teller who can sense guilt and turn your brain into soup.

OK, I can tell that those escape routes were teleporters the moment I saw the effect so twist ruined, but the character interactions were excellent, and the other twist of the episode was so good I’m not going to spoil it here.

It’s the first episode this series that hasn’t felt too dedicated to Clara, perhaps because of the supporting cast took up development time she would’ve otherwise had, but I’m really not complaining, especially with the knowledge that with Danny Pink being a major player in the next episode, she’s gonna have a major role again.

The effects look decent, although what was with that cut as they went through that shaft, it just wasn’t necessary, two second it would’ve taken to show them walking it, but that’s really nitpicking, I don’t have much more to say about this episode. Well written, engaging and fun, without being insulting.

Rating 9/10
