Editorial - What I saw in Batman and Robin Eternal and Star Wars Rebels season 2

Last year I made 2 editorials on what I wanted to see in Batman and Robin: Eternal and Star Wars Rebels season 2, time for the long overdue follow up to that.

Batman and Robin: Eternal told the story of Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Harper Rowe and Cassandra Cain banding together to defeat Mother, and discovering her links to a long lost case and how Batman almost did the unthinkable. It had its issues but was ultimately a well-told story once again.

5. Batwoman

Really, this one can be glanced over because Batwoman did not appear in this title. Whilst the wedding ring was still false advertising, it's at least satisfying that her romance angle is being explored in the current Detective Comics run and may appear again in her own title.

4. Nightwing

OK, I still have no idea what this was about. The blonde Nightwing in the teaser still hasn't shown up, I'm guessing it's another bit of false advertising as Dick Grayson has returned to the mantle now.

3. Harper Row aka Bluebird

Harper Row was front and centre in this story. As they tied the story into the death of Harper Row's parents. This allowed to get some emotional moments. I kinda wish her brother got a bit more spotlight as he largely disappeared early on. Harper Row may be retired for now but she at least got some spotlight here.

2. A more recognisable main villain

OK, nope this didn't happen. At least this spent the majority of the runtime not being a mystery. Mother was a new character but it tied into David Caine's Orphan, Azreal and some flashbacks involving the Scarecrow. Most of the a-listers were no-where to be seen in this title.

1. More widespread character development

Despite only being half the length of the previous eternal miniseries, I feel this was the greatest accomplishment of this series. By focusing on a smaller number of plot threads and characters, they were able to develop character for all of them.

Star Wars Rebels season 2

The second season of Star Wars Rebels saw the rebels seeking to establish a base of operations whilst being hunted at every turn by the Empire and new Inquisitors. It's a strong season even if the plot moved along pretty slowly, but did it deliver my top 5?

5) More character development for the ghost crew.

There were certainly more character focus episodes than there were last season, helped by the extra episodes but in terms of development and change, there are few examples but many of them are trivial in the grand scheme of things. I hope to see actual character growth as season 3 progresses, there was already some with Kanan and Ezra but that's par the course for the show.

4) More Star Wars Cameos

There was really only one major cameo in this series, aside from Lando's brief appearance in the Siege of Lothal and Darth Vader's occasional appearances and that was Princess Leia, and it's well appreciated especially as she helps Ezra go through the pain of finding out his parents are dead.

3) A new character to join the ghost

Does Rex really count? I suppose he does, even if he's absent for several episodes at a time, much like Ahsoka. Ketsu also joins the rebels at one point and that inventory droid from the chopper episode is around somewhere. It's not 100% there but I'll give it that one?

2) A character to die/depart

Ahsoka did not get a lot of focus, her arc was back in the Clone Wars. Also, read the Ahsoka novel, it's very good. She also appeared only in a few episodes but her character still made an impact on the series and her exit felt justified. Her overall fate is largely a mystery, and something they'll hopefully explore at a later time

1) Ahsoka vs Vader

In the final episode of the season, they delivered this promise and they delivered it big. The fight was amazing if disappointingly brief and with no definite outcome. But it's probably never going to happen again, so I shall savour it.

Next time (probably tomorrow) we shall celebrate the shock announcement in America last week...

NOT HIM!

Young Justice is getting a third season!!
