Time Month: Mini Review - 2035: Forbidden Dimensions

We are coming to the end of Time Month

And despite my worries, the movies so far whilst not all brilliant and some fundamentally flawed haven’t been as bad as I worried they might be. Is that all about to change with the next one.

Yes. Yes it is

This is 2035: Forbidden Dimensions

Released in 2013 and also named ‘The Forbidden Dimensions,’ 2035 was produced on a mere $35000 budget and is said to pay homage to Mad Max. I have watched the Mad Max movies in preparation for this review. Also, even the worst and first of the Mad Max movies had a bigger budget ($350000-$400000), and that was in 1979.

It holds a whopping 1.7/10 on IMDb.

Again we seem to be looking at a passion project. Christopher James Miller holds credits in writing, acting, directing, editing, camera and electrical, animation, makeup and music. It’s kinda surprising he isn’t also a producer. He has a few credits to his name, some of them with decent IMDb ratings but nothing really in the public eye. So, will this impress?

No. No it won’t

Let’s take a look.

Let’s start with plot. Erm… I think this movie has one of those. There’s a guy named Jack who can transport into the future at some point but doesn’t really have any control over it. And there’s a Mad Max-esque future complete with a very discount Thunderdome and a mad scientist who is by far the most entertaining part of the movie. And apparently, there’s alien experiments that caused the future to turn to sh*t and Jack is solar eclipse child who is capable of reversing the future and needs to find a woman named Kadiva, I think.

Look, this movie pretty much gives up even having a plot after the first third. From there it’s mostly about the visuals. I can see how the 2035 segments do pay homage to Mad Max with costumes, design, the desert area, the people and the mutants, of course because of its low budget it looks, and let me pay homage Mad Max here

Yeah, it’s not worth shouting home about, but it’s far from my biggest issue with this movie. The biggest issue with this movie is the editing. Holy sh*t is this one of the worst edited things I’ve seen in my life. Every other scene is shot in a different filter and there are seizure inducing flashes of no consequence to the ‘plot’ whatsoever. It’s distracting and pointless to boot as nothing is accomplished by them. Worse the segments displaying these effects go on far too long, the pacing of this movie is one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

The acting, it’s not good, not good at all. The majority of characters’ sound stilted and under-deliver their lines with no emotion. There is one actor who overacts to the point of insanity and honestly, it’s a welcome relief.

But let’s get to the exploitation part of this film. This film, particular past the half way point seems to delight in the torture of our main character. I don’t feel sorry for him, because that would require me actually being invested in his character so the scenes are just uncomfortable and there are several of them. And yes, there is gratuitous nudity of both the male and female varieties in this film, it serves no purpose whatsoever.

Objectively speaking, this is the worst movie I’ve ever seen. It’s not as rage inducing as The Last Airbender but with that I had prior investment in the animated series, here this is just pure cr*p and I’ll gladly never watch it again.

Rating 8/100
