Legend of Korra Book 3 Chapter 10 review - Long Live the Queen

Chapter 10 – Long live the queen

Well, airbending’s suddenly a lot scarier, isn’t it?

If there’s one thing you don’t see a lot of in Korra its Korra actually helping people in person, without it being the main objective of the series.

Think about it. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Team Avatar:
Rescued Earth Kingdom Prisoners from a Fire Navy Ship
Saved a village from an angry spirit
Saved a village of fire nation villagers from Jet’s attack
Helped protect two warring tribes through the great divide
Saved a village from a volcanic eruption
Saved the Northern Air Temple’s new inhabitants from a fire nation attack
Rescued the Omashu citizens
Protected a village from the rough rhinos
Guided a pregnant woman through the serpents pass
Destroyed a drill attacking Ba-sing-se
Helped a man build a bigger zoo
Helped the Earth King discover the truth about his city
Rescued a fire nation village from the fire nation’s army
Rescued citizens from the puppet master

Meanwhile in Korra… (In books 1 and 2)
Rescued some shopkeepers from a bending triad

And that’s about it – just to be clear, I am aware, Korra helped people in doing things like defeating Amon and vanquishing Unalaatu. But… There aren’t that many instances of Team Avatar, stopping what they’re doing to help people

Until this book came along. It seems to have crossed their minds, that this truth was so, and they’re taking steps to rectify it. Her rescuing the girl from the spirit vines, her talking down the man who ran to Kyoshi bridge, her rescuing of Airbenders from Ba Sing Se and now her rescuing her would-be captors from, was that a sand shark would be good examples

Of course, with this, it’s not all Korra, Asami was a vital component to this, even Korra admits that, and I find that great (we need to see a Bolin/Korra team up now, haven’t seen one of those in a while)

In the mean-time, we do find a little more about the Red Lotus. Is it me, or does Ming Hua not believe in the Red Lotus cause at all? Bolin’s belief that there might be an attraction between her and Ghazan (as with Zaheer and P’li) was a nice moment for the series

It is unfortunate that Bolin is still unable to metal-bend, despite his part of the focusing on that. He may be a prominent Earthbender, but he does need something to distinguish himself from Korra. A popular fan-theory is that he’ll learn Lava-bending. I find this an interesting suggestion, and I think it would definitely be a good thing to see.

Back to the Red Lotus, we see them interact with the Earth Queen, who acts as you’d expect her too. I’m better than you, and you’re all pathetic bounty hunters. One of the best things about them, is that they’re so non-aggressive that you could under-estimate them, as the Earth Queen did, to her inevitable downfall.  (Is it just me, or did you think Nickelodeon insisted they say darkness instead of death in this phrase “Without freedom, there is no life, only darkness”)

Anyway, the Earth Queen is dead, and we see the return of Tonraq and Zuko, who have been doing… I have no idea what since P’li’s escape. The scene with the dragon is also quite funny. Also, nice that they acknowledge Lin is a detective. SOMETHING I WISH THEY'D ACKNOWLEDGED IN BOOK 2!

Rating 9/10
